A Samaritan Experience

Posted On 11 December, 2007, 10:07 pm by executive

Winter in Northwest Ontario not only brings out the worst in driving conditions, it also brings out the best in people who act as Samaritans. I was offered a classic example on December 6.

Large flakes of snow, beautiful to behold in snow globes or drifting down outside while you are comfortable in your house listening to Christmas carols admiring a tree bestowed with decorations, are not the favourite sight of drivers, especially when those pristine flakes come down in droves obscuring visibility and reducing highway traction.

Such greeted me on the tail-end of my journey home from a 2-day road trip from the Greenstone area, normally a 3-hour drive in ideal conditions. I had the benefit of a 4-wheel drive Dodge Dakota rental, and I resolved to take it easy and go with the flow of traffic. When I was about 50 km from home, traffic ahead drifted to a stop. Climbing out of my vehicle to join the curious driver ahead likewise exiting, we were briefed by the transport driver ahead of us: a traffic accident up ahead had closed the road. Clearance time was unknown, but the veteran trucker advised it might be up to 10 hours. So close to home, yet so far.

Eventually word got back that the accident was a fatality and the road definitely was not opening up soon. I mused about what to do: should I be patient in my vehicle with the long line of traffic, or should I turn back and try to find a room for the night? The Dakota was cozy, tunes were sounding good, and who knows, perhaps the road block might be lifted sooner.

Shortly after 6:00 p.m. there was knocking on my side window and bundled figures in the darkness. I opened my door to discover two snow-suited Samaritans, a husband and wife from up the road offering coffee to the “strandees”. I graciously accepted a coffee, politely declined a ham sandwich and helped myself to the tasty Finnish pastry proffered (taking a second in response to the husband’s prompt, “Oh, you can’t just have one.”)

More valuable than the food however was the directions they offered as to how I could get home through a 20-minute detour down a secondary gravel road just past their driveway. Wonderful news!

I took my time on the twisty snow-covered road, keeping to the posted limits of 40 kph and 60 kph, and was pleased to emerge back on the highway some 30-minutes later, on the other side of the roadblock. In another half-hour I was home, eternally grateful for the Winter Samaritans who not only provided nourishment for my body, but also my soul as I reflected upon their selfless acts.

It also reminded me that we as Kin have many opportunities to be Samaritans within our communities – helping others without any expectation of return.

Guy Madill (Winnipeg) CF Fundraiser

Posted On 14 May, 2007, 08:10 pm by

I would like to ride my bike from Headinly Manitoba to Distict to raise monenys for CF. If people would donate a dollar to every kilometer I ride all the moneys would go to total that Distict would raise at Distict Convention in Portage La Praire. All I would ask for is a trailer vehicle to follow me with fresh water, food for stacks and lunch. If Portage could manage a massage when I arrive. That would be awesome. The quicker this gets to everybody the sooner kin could start getting sighs together. CF is our National Sponsor I don’t think to many people living with CF could do this. I do what I know. I look forward to your response. PS If you like my Idea I would be proud to spash CF all over a riding jersey. I hope this all you need. Thanks for listening Talk to yaw Just Guy
